June 2006 - Delaware Electric Cooperative, a member-owned electric utility serving 65,000 customers in Delaware, announced the availability of a green power option. Customers can choose to purchase 100-kWh blocks of renewable energy at an initial price of $0.20 per block, or 0.2¢/kWh. The Renewable Energy Rider rate is subject to market conditions and will be reset each June 1. Customers must purchase a minimum of one block and must subscribe to the service for at least one year. The renewable energy for the first year will be sourced from Delaware-based, landfill-gas generation sources.
Under the terms of Delaware's "Renewable Energy Portfolio Standards Act" passed in 2005, the Co-op and other publicly owned utilities are allowed to opt out of the state's renewable portfolio standard requirement by offering their retail customers a green power option.
