October 1999 - PNGC is a not-for-profit, private energy services cooperative owned by 11 electric cooperative utilities in the Pacific Northwest. PNGC owns and operates the Coffin-Butte landfill gas generation facility, which became operational in 1995. While the output of the 2.5-MW plant is shared proportionally among the member cooperatives, three Oregon-based members are test-marketing the output to their customers as a premium green power service. The three utilities are Central Electric Cooperative, Douglas Electric Cooperative, and Umatilla Electric Cooperative. The green premium ranges from 1.8¢/kWh to 2.0¢/kWh. The most successful of these efforts appears to be with Central, where more than 3% of the utility's customers have reportedly subscribed to purchase one or more 100-kWh blocks. PNGC hopes to expand the size of the project in the near future.
