  • Most of the energy consumed in the United States comes from fossil fuels (petroleum, coal, and natural gas). These fossil fuels and crude oil-based petroleum products are the major sources of energy used in the United States.
  • Renewable energy resources currently supply about 10% of total U.S. energy consumption.
  • The United States began using nuclear energy to generate electricity in the late 1950s. Nuclear energy supplies about 20% of total U.S. electricity.
