Recreational Expenditures:
- Annual estimates are available for marine recreational fishing trip expenditures and durable equipment expenditures for the years 2006 through 2012. They are in nominal dollars, which are not adjusted for inflation.
- The marine recreational expenditures are categorized into the following expenditure types: for-hire trips, private boat trips, shore trips, and durable equipment expenditures related to marine recreational fishing, which include expenditures on fishing tackle and gear, fishing related equipment, boats, vehicles, and second homes.
- Expenditures within the three trip modes (for-hire trips, private boat trips, and shore trips) are available for both residents and non-residents of the state where the fishing trip took place.
- Trip expenditures are additive across states or trip modes; however, durable equipment expenditures cannot be added across all states to generate a national estimate and therefore total expenditures cannot be added across states to generate a national estimate. Durable equipment and total expenditures at the national level are generated with the aggregate U.S. model.
- Trip expenditures from 2006-2010 are estimated based on mean trip expenditure estimates from a nationwide survey of anglers in 2006. The estimates for 2007 to 2010 are generated by combining the 2006 mean trip estimates adjusted by a CPI price inflator and annual estimates of the numbers of trips by mode, state, and residence from annual NMFS marine recreation surveys and state surveys. Annual estimates of expenditures for select categories of consumer durables obtained from a variety of published data sources are used to update the 2006 estimates of durable equipment expenditures per angler by state and residence for the years 2007 to 2010. The updated estimates of expenditures per angler and annual estimates of the numbers of anglers are then used to estimate total expenditures on durable equipment. The data collection instrument used to collect the 2006 expenditure data and the methods used to estimate mean and total expenditures are described in Gentner, B. and S. Steinback. 2008. The Economic Contribution of Marine Angler Expenditures in the United States, 2006. U.S. Department of Commerce. NOAA Technical Memorandum NMFS-F/SPO-94. The methods for generating the marine recreational expenditures for 2006 can be found in the angler expenditures section of the methods section of the report.
- Trip and durable expenditures for 2011-2012 are estimated based on mean trip and annual durable estimates from a nationwide survey of anglers in 2011. The estimates for 2012 are generated by combining the 2011 mean estimates adjusted by a CPI price inflator and annual estimates of the numbers of trips by mode, state, and residence and number of participants by state and resident status (for durable expenditures) from annual NMFS marine recreation surveys and state surveys. The data collection instrument used to collect the 2011 expenditure data and the methods used to estimate mean and total expenditures are described in Lovell, S., S. Steinback, and J. Hilger. 2013. The Economic Contribution of Marine Angler Expenditures in the United States, 2011. U.S. Department of Commerce. NOAA Technical Memorandum NMFS-F/SPO134.
