MRIP Projects

Since 2008, MRIP has funded survey improvement projects and survey program reviews in all regions of the U.S. and its Territories. Projects span everything from utilizing electronic reporting tools to mail surveys to increasing precision of estimates. -Internet based angler logs as a source of fishery dependent data

Description

The process facilitates a leadership role for MRIP data collection programs and sets standards for electronic reporting system developers wishing to provide meaningful data for inclusion in stock assessments. Objective: The primary objective of the study is to provide guidelines for the establishment and upkeep of panel-based e-logs that are consistent with MRIP goals and augment rather than compete with MRIP data.

-Massachusetts Recreational Bluefin Tuna Landings Census Pilot - Phase I: Design and Testing

Description

Design and test a census-based data collection program for the Massachusetts recreational Bluefin tuna fishery, which has increased markedly in recent years. Objective: Test the effectiveness, feasibility and appropriateness of a census-based method for monitoring recreational bluefin tuna landings.

-MDMS Phase 3: Scalability, Reporting and Metadata [aka MDMS 3.0]

Description

MDMS 3.0 will expand the system to focus on three specific areas: collect additional information management details and integrate with the NMFS Information Portal (InPort) metadata repository to fulfill increasing information management requirements, enhance project workflow and reporting functionality, and build a scalable framework to allow for broader use of MDMS for project and metadata management by other MRIP teams. -Measurement Error in the CHTS and ALDS: Assessing the Effects of Length of Recall Period on Data Quality

Description

Design and implement an experiment to test the effect of different timeframes between an angler’s trip and when they are surveyed on data quality. Objective: Test the impacts on data quality of a shortened reporting period.

-MRIP Data Management Standard 2.0

Description

MDMS will be updated to coordinate two critical information management processes: meeting the requirements of the Data Policy, and MRIP project reporting. Objective: An online tool to allow MRIP project leads to generate project proposals, plans, and reports that are currently generated manually.

-National-Level Recreational Fisheries Query

Description

A National-level recreational fisheries query will be achieved through seamless integration with the existing Fisheries Information Networks in order to fully leverage the valuable work already being done at the state and regional levels and to ensure maximum inclusion of target data. Objective: To create a publicly accessible website that provides tools for accessing and summarizing current National-level recreational fisheries data.

-Non-response Bias Study for the Large Pelagics Telephone Survey

Description

Conduct a follow-up study of the effects of non-response in the Large Pelagic Telephone Survey. Explore estimation designs to account for potential nonresponse error. Objective: Determine how non-response to the Large Pelagics Telephone Survey affects the accuracy of the data and identify steps to improve data quality.

-Non-Tournament Highly Migratory Species Recreational Landings Reporting in Puerto Rico Phase I: Fishery Characterization and Outreach

Description

Characterize the Puerto Rico highly migratory species fishery through a survey of private recreational fishermen. Objective: Develop recommendations for improving the way we collect information from anglers who fish for highly migratory species in Puerto Rico.

-Online MRIP For-Hire Vessel Directory

Description
